In 1960, Robert P. McCulloch purchased 4,500 acres of land northeast of Scottsdale. The land was once a cattle ranch and was a part of the largest land and cattle holdings in Arizona. Tha land is now known as Fountain Hills in Central Arizona, located in Maricopa County. The town is nestled in the McDowell Mountains 500 feet above Phoenix. The McDowell Mountains are located on the west, Fort McDowell Indian Reservation on the east, Salt River Indian Reservation on the south and the McDowell Mountain Regional Park on the south, all of which guarantee the town will be protected from the Valley's growth. Fountain Hills is 30 miles northeast of downtown Phoenix in the North Valley. The town covers 11,340 acres of land.
The Fountain Hills Unified School District has earned a reputation for excellent academic programs, noteworthystudent achievement and high levels of parent and community involvement.
Fountain Hills is an upscale residential area in the Phoenix area that has lots of amenities worth noting, including the world's highest shooting fountain. This man-made fountain is Arizona's answer to Old Faithful. It shoots water 560 feet into the air every hour on the hour for 30 minutes from 10 am until 9 pm daily. Along with many other parks and public recreational areas, residents enjoy many community events held throughout the year.
During the early 1990's, Fountain Hills was rated one of the fifty best places to raise a family. One of the best characteristics of the town is the spectacular views and fresh air coupled with the proximity of the city life in Phoenix. The town continues to grow, although Indian Reservations, a park and a mountain range place a restriction on how far the town will stretch. |
